Bozeman students plan walkout to protest gun violence

Many are planning to demonstrate again in the future, although not necessarily during the school day, as they will receive unexcused absences for leaving class. The principal would announce that there was an intruder and everyone should take shelter.

Soon, my students will be old enough to vote. I would like to believe that those arguing for arming our teachers are coming from a genuine place of trying to protect children. Mental health is the long-term solution.

Specifically, versions of the bill that are now floating around Florida's Legislature would direct $67 million of state funds to a so-called "school marshal" program that would arm 10 teachers in every school, leading to roughly 37,000 gun-toting educators across the state. They have counseling and every support mechanism is available to students and parents. There's also debate over whether such a program should be optional or mandatory. They say that after this experience, they've sworn that off for good.

"If you weren't in Parkland, Florida, that day you can still connect with that anywhere around the world in any language", said another student, Ryan Deitsch.
