Netanyahu associate to testify in corruption probe

A Hareetz analysis titled "The Final Days of Benjamin Netanyahu's Rule", called Filber's testimony on Tuesday a "mortal blow" to the Prime Minister's leadership.

Authorities said there's "sufficient evidence" to charge Netanyahu with "accepting bribes, fraud and breach of trust". Netanyahu's former chief of staff Ari Harow has also signed a state witness settlement in which he agreed to testify against his former mentor.

Netanyahu and his wife, Sara, have always been saddled with a penchant for expensive tastes and questionable use of public funds.

The Gallup organization in a report issued late Wednesday evening found that prior to the corruption allegations, slightly more than half of Israelis, or 52 percent, said in 2017 that they approved of how Netanyahu was handling his job as prime minister.

Barak said he closely knows Netanyahu and believes he "understands that this is the end of the story" but will try and postpone the inevitable in different ways. Likewise, regarding the Netanyahu and Milchan case, the police have added bribery as well.

In another fresh case announced this week, two Netanyahu allies are alleged to have offered a judge promotion in exchange for dropping a case against the premier's wife. The process is expected to take several months. Furthermore, Netanyahu has claimed that the lead investigator and the investigation in general bias and has proclaimed that the investigation is just a political attack that the Israeli left-wing is making against himself and the right-winged side of the Israeli Government.

In an investigation nicknamed "Case 4000", police are investigating whether Netanyahu relaxed regulation that was digging into the profits of Israeli telecommunications giant Bezeq in exchange for positive media coverage by a newspaper owned by Bezeq's majority shareholder Shaul Elovitch. Under the deal, Filber, who formerly served as director general of the Communications Ministry under Netanyahu, will not serve jail time.

Former journalists at the Walla news site have attested to being pressured to refrain from negative reporting of Netanyahu.

Netanyahu has not been named as a suspect, but some of his closest associates have been implicated in probe related to a possible conflict of interest involving a $2 billion purchase of German submarines. Consequently, many critics of the Prime Minister and his party have made the statement that the legislation ultimately makes it tougher for police to indict public officials thus protecting Prime Minister Netanyahu from being removed due to the crimes.

Livni said Netanyahu is corrupt and is so preoccupied with trying to save his political life that he can not effectively govern. Hefetz is suspected of suggesting, through a middleman, to Judge Hila Gerstel in 2015 that she could be appointed attorney general if she dismissed a pending case against Sara Netanyahu's excessive household spending.
