Florida House votes down assault weapon ban

Florida House votes down assault weapon ban

About 100 survivors from the high school traveled 450 miles from Parkland to the state capital to speak to legislators Wednesday.

Nearly all 71 lawmakers who voted against considering the measure have an "A" rating from the National Rifle Association.

During the same session of the House, lawmakers voted against discussing a bill that would ban the assault rifles like the one that 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz used to shoot and kill 17 people at his former high school just last week.

A bill to ban assault rifles and large-capacity magazines has been circulating through several subcommittees in the Florida House of Representatives in recent months, but had not been scheduled for a hearing on the House floor. According to the Tampa Bay Times, the bill is asking for "education, research and policy changes to protect Floridians, especially teenagers, from pornography".

They are also planning a mass rally March 24 in Washington, D.C., to demand an end to gun violence and school shootings. The motion to debate the bill required a two-third majority vote; however, it failed and the merits were not even considered.

The legislation to declare pornography a health risk was sponsored by GOP Rep. Ross Spano, who is running to be attorney general. Similar measures have been filed or adopted in other states, including Utah, Tennessee and Virginia.

A companion resolution in the Senate (SR 480), backed by Lakeland Republican Kelli Stargel, has not been heard.

According to CNN, "almost all 71 lawmakers who voted against considering a assault rifle ban have an "A" rating from the National Rifle Association". "I am fairly certain that we are going to have some changes in Tallahassee".

"Further context: the Census Bureau reports ages 18-29 turnout rate was 30 percent in 1974, the first midterm election 18-20 yr olds could vote (except in 4 states) and followed the close of the Vietnam War", McDonald tweeted.
