Apple devices with Telugu character sent on bootloop while software update

Just like the infamous "ChaiOS" bug that caused iMessage to crash with a single link, this lone Indian Telugu language character is affecting a number of iPhones running iOS 11.2.5.

According to The Verge, the only way for users to recover their message app is to have someone send another message, try to access messages and delete the thread of messages with the special character.

We picked up on a report earlier today about a new bug in iOS 11.2 that's making iPhones crash and even disabling access to apps like iMessages and WhatsApp.

Typing or receiving a message containing the letter also causes third-party apps such as Gmail and WhatsApp to crash. In this case the entire SpringBoard may crash. The bug also affects platforms other than the iPhone, such as the Apple Watch. Now, instead of putting too much burden on the engineers to develop the annual update on time and cramp a bunch of features in a single update, Apple has planned to focus exclusively on the operating system of its iPhone and iPad series of devices for the next two years.

The character in question is from the Telugu language which spoken by approximately 70 million people in India. In trying to load the characters, the device and potentially the apps too crash.

Still, until that updated version is released - or, indeed, until Apple pushes out a patch before that point comes - it's a frustrating and potentially very disruptive issue. After this, you should be able to get back in there and delete the spooky Telugu character. Fixes are expected when Apple releases updates for iOS and macOS later this month. The company is working on a fix for iOS 11, macOS High Sierra, watchOS 4, tvOS 11 versions that have been affected by the bug. The update also advises developers to ensure their current apps are X-compatible and take advantage of its new features and those in iOS 11.
