Facebook lost almost 3 million users younger than 25 in 2017

The digital measurement firm predicted last year that Facebook would see a 3.4 percent drop in 12- to 17-year-old users in the U.S.in 2017, the first time it had predicted a drop in usage for any age group on Facebook.

This demographic shift has been on the Facebook radar for some time now, but previously the brand could rely on platform shifters to move to Instagram, which Facebook also owns. In fact, the over-55 set are expected to add 400,000 new users to Facebook's social platform passenger list, bringing the total number to an estimated 6.3 million. Not all of those users are migrating to Instagram, also owned by Facebook.

According to eMarketer principal analyst Debra Aho Williamson, "Instagram will add 1.6 million users and Snapchat 1.9 million users this year, which will be added to the Instagram user up 104.7 million users total and 86.5 million users for Snapchat in the United States".

It added that, while 83 per cent of social network users aged 18-24 will use Facebook in 2018, its share will fall to 81.5 per cent by 2021. This latest forecast indicates that it is more than just a theory. Meanwhile, a so-called "Facebook-nevers" tween demo is skipping the site entirely.

Despite its recent struggles, Facebook remains the most popular social network on the internet. Over the past few years, the social networking site's teen audience has been decreasing substantially.

The growth trends predicted by eMarketer indicate Facebook is reaching a saturation point in the USA and needs to boost its younger user base in order to sustain future growth. A Facebook spokesperson declined to comment on the firm's latest report. It's a grown-up problem for Facebook, which needs young users to develop the habit of checking Facebook so it can show them advertising into adulthood. This year, less than half of Americans between the ages of 12 and 17 will log on to Facebook even once during any given month.

A social scientist, Julie Smith from Denver said in a statement that, "Teens want that instant gratification". While that has pushed Instagram as a likely destination that the younger will like to get along with, Snapchat still seems to hold on to its appeal among its intended clientele. Their minds move quickly. Further, Broughton thinks that Facebooks' video and photo experience offer a platform that helps them to stay connected with their kids and the grandchildren.

But perhaps it should be alarmed - MySpace looked unbeatable until Facebook came along, and it quickly fell off a cliff. It's easy to see how Snapchat's relative ephemerality is alluring on that front.
