Apple shifts approach on feature development, report says

Apple has a lot of ideas in the works for iOS. You do not have to be a keen observer to know that iOS on iPhone or iPad is no longer the same as it used to be.

Though there has been a constant debate over the quality issue, probably Apple might have compromised some in the software quality. Although present in the early developer betas, it was then quietly pulled and failed to materialize again in the iOS 11 release later that year. As per the report, the features that have been pushed to 2019 include a redesigned home screen, updates apps like Mail, and some reported tweaks in the Photos app. The new features will be implemented as a part of the software release that is recently codenamed as "Peace". Apple is also bringing Animoji to FaceTime, allowing iOS users to place a virtual emoji over their face while using the company's video chat platform - a feature Apple should have launched Animoji with.

And isn't that what everyone wants?

So the whole company keeps its eyes on the all-important product-release schedule. This was so common we just called it conversation #37 and move on.

But it trickles down to software as well.

In recent times, the iPhone owners faced a number of glitches such as not being able to take calls or a bug that caused iPhones to crash past year. The leak had the potential for the discovery of new bugs, loopholes or security vulnerabilities that could pose a significant risk to iPhone users. The group has claimed that they only wanted the code for "security research".

Apple's shift is aimed at giving its engineers more time to fine-tune existing iOS capabilities, and reduce the pressure on them to deliver big, new, headline-grabbing features, according to a report in Bloomberg today that cited unnamed company insiders. "This change is Apple beginning to realize that schedules are not being hit, stuff is being released with bugs - which previously would not have happened", when Apple was a smaller company with fewer engineers, customers and devices to manage, says one person familiar with the company.

Apple Inc. has reportedly chose to slow down its annual software updates for iOS and macOS and instead will spread out new features over the next two years. Stay tuned for further updates on the upcoming Apple's iPad. They're only available on the iPhone X right now as the handset has the required Face ID camera. "The renewed focus on quality is created to make sure the company can fulfill promises made each summer at the annual developers conference and that new features work reliably and as advertised", according to the report.

Senior vice president of software engineering Craig Federighi is reported to have outlined the company's new update strategy during a meeting with Apple engineers last month.

That's changed in recent years.

Steven Sinofsky, a former Microsoft executive who's now a board partner at Andreessen Horowitz, highlighted this line of thinking in a series of tweets on Monday.

In other words, Sinofsky says, what's happening at Apple is a natural reaction to the balance a giant project like iOS needs.
