Facebook testing new 'Today In' feed to better showcase local news & events

Facebook Inc on Thursday began to change the way it filters posts and videos on its centerpiece News Feed, the start of what Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said would be a series of changes in the design of the world's largest social network.

Facebook is also looking to double down on a strategy of promoting content shared by friends and family over posts published by news outlets, other people familiar with the situation said.

The changes are meant to maximize the amount of content with "meaningful interaction" that people consume on Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, the company's chief executive, said in an interview.

Zuckerberg rationalized that the changes will ultimately make for a better Facebook experience, naturally, but might actually cause people to spend less time on the social network.

Do you think "Today In" is a step in the right direction for Facebook, or is there more the company needs to do?

Such a move would thrust Facebook into an even more active role in deciding what content is acceptable on its site. Most of that video content is not promoted in News Feed but can be found by clicking on the Watch tab.

Facebook relies heavily on engagement to sort content on its News Feed.

Zuckerberg said earlier this month that his personal goal for 2018 would be to focus on "fixing" many of these existential issues, including "making sure that time spent on Facebook is time well spent". Last year, the social media giant also tested products to connect its users to local news. On the other hand, passively scrolling through social media does not.

After all, Facebook isn't exactly hiding the fact that in the news feed, family and friends and sharing come first.

He added that Facebook had begun making changes in this direction a year ago. It is unclear how the News Feed changes will affect its video relationships with partners, but already the company had been pulling back on funding the live video and short clips that appear in feeds.

Does this mean you are eliminating Page content from News Feed?

"Facebook is in the midst of all of these fires it's trying to put out, it's trying to reassert its warm and fuzzy brand value that it has always tried to put forth", he told the BBC.

After some time, Facebook's calculation change might be important to advance social attachment and make the Internet not so much exploitative but rather more significant.
