Does Trump know the national anthem? Debate rages after football title game

Trump attended the College Football National Championship Game on Monday.

President Donald Trump chose to take in some good old-fashioned American fun by taking in the country's most popular past time-a football game. Trump seemed more excited to sing along near the end of the song, according to the pool report.

"We want our flag respected, and we want our National Anthem respected also", Trump said during a speech to a farmers' convention in Nashville, Tennessee.

Footage showed Trump mouthing the wrong words as a choir of four harmonised, "at the twilight's last gleaming", and during other segments of The Star-Spangled Banner.

And given the president's strong stance on the national anthem, it's no surprise that his critics pounced.

Was his mind on something else or did he genuinely not know the words?

During one of his speeches, Trump even called a football player who refused to stand at attention during the performance of the USA national anthem "son of a bitch".

A camera near the locker room where the Alabama players were exiting meanwhile appeared to catch one shout an expletive as he made his way to the field.

Protesters waved white towels in the stands _ the color chosen to mock how liberals are often called "snowflakes", The Washington Post reported. Another person tweeted, "Trump's been trying to get football players fired for kneeling during the National Anthem and this man can't even mumble it on national television right". The majority of black voters disagree with Trump's condemnation of the National Football League protests.

The president was reportedly greeted with a mixture of cheers and boos while taking the field. He renewed the attack earlier Monday on Twitter.
