Panthers fire offensive coordinator Shula, QBs coach Dorsey

Dorsey and Mike Shula were both shown the door Tuesday as Panthers head coach Ron Rivera announced changes to his staff two days after Carolina lost to New Orleans in the NFC playoffs.

Shula spent seven seasons with Carolina, working as the quarterbacks coach before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2013.

Ken Dorsey is out as the quarterbacks coach of the Carolina Panthers.

Shula was originally hired by the Panthers at the conclusion of the 2010 season in order to serve as the franchise's quarterbacks coach.

But both have paid the price for a poor passing season, the Panthers finishing 28th in the National Football League in passing yards and failing to take advantage of their fourth-ranked rushing game. I'll evaluate the coaches, the scheme and we'll go from that.

The announcement came one day after Carolina coach Ron Rivera said he didn't anticipate making any changes to the Panthers' coaching staff.

He started to have second thoughts and chose to meet with interim general manager Marty Hurney about the decision. The only other time Newton threw as many interceptions was his rookie season when he threw 17.

However, its passing game has sputtered. Dorsey has been the quarterbacks coach the past five seasons.

Shula has been the Panthers' offensive coordinator since the 2013 season, leading the NFL's No. 1 scoring offense during the team's run to the Super Bowl back in 2015.
