Despite Trump's Iran Tweets, US involvement likely to be limited

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley further scrutinized the Iranian government for its detestable behavior suppressing pro-democratic forces protesting the Islamist regime. More specifically, he alleged that the Central Intelligence Agency planned to turn the protest into an "armed" insurrection by mid-February, the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, according to the AP.

Nikki Haley also said the worldwide community can't let Iran silence protesters' messages, particularly by blocking some social media platforms.

Pollock said Trump's rhetoric reflects the president's strong view of Iran as an enemy. Authorities say the protests are waning.

"The people of Iran are rising up". The Iranian regime is now on notice.

Foreign activists said protests were held in other cities as well, but the AP could not independently verify that. The proposed defense budget has increased 40 percent over two years, as Iranian involvement in Syria, Iraq and Lebanon has escalated.

He said the majority emphasized the need to fully implement the 2015 nuclear deal and to refrain from interfering in the affairs of other countries.

US President weighed in on protests in Saturday, warning that the country's people want change and 'oppressive regimes can not endure forever'.

While U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed support for demonstrators in Iran and engaged in heightened rhetoric, the United States is likely to hang back and avoid direct involvement, U.S. experts said.

Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif wrote on his Twitter account that the meeting was "another foreign policy blunder for the Trump administration".

The United Kingdom's ambassadorto the United Nations has encouraged all member states to stay committed to the Iran nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), IRNA reports. Iran's Ambassador Gholamali Khoshroo slammed the meeting as a "farce" and a "waste of time" and said the Council should instead focus on addressing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict or the war in Yemen.

"The Iranian situation did not pose a threat to global peace and security, and discussing its domestic situation is not part of the Council's responsibilities as outlined in the Charter", he said.

The Iranian government has restricted the use of social media sites, including Telegram and Instagram in a bid to stamp out protests.

Russia's Permanent Representative Vassily Nebenzia said that if the Council followed the reasoning behind convening the the meeting over domestic protests in Iran, it should have met after the protests in the United States that followed the killing of an African-American teenager in Ferguson by a white police officer in 2014. It has said those restrictions will be lifted on Friday, and there were signs Thursday that it had begun easing some of them.
