Weather Data Points to Massive 'Bomb Cyclone' Hitting Eastern US

Even year-round golf paradise Myrtle Beach in northeastern SC wasn't spared, with the overnight temperature dropping to -7 C on Tuesday just before the start of a rare winter storm that was expected to dump up to eight centimetres of snow on the region.

Here is the latest from WPC regarding the East Coast winter storm for Wednesday and Thursday.

The winter mix along with low wind chills could cause widespread power outages and ice over roadways, making commuting treacherous for millions of Americans from northern Florida to southern Virginia, the National Weather Service said in a series of warnings.

But what does that mean?

Once the storm arrives in the ocean east of New England on Thursday, its central pressure would have fallen dramatically over the course of 24 hours. "This weather phenomenon is an area of low pressure that rapidly intensifies within a short amount of time".

"This winter storm typically brings damaging wind conditions from 50-70 miles per hour along with blizzard-like precipitation", Bart said.

The extreme weather will come in two parts.

"Winter storm watches and warnings have been issued as far south as parts of north Florida, coastal Georgia, and the low country of SC, including the cities of Savannah, Ga".

A massive winter storm known as a "bomb cyclone" will smash into the US East Coast this week.

All three deaths occurred in North Carolina from the "bomb cyclone" of snow and wind, including two men who died Wednesday night when their pickup truck slid off a bridge and landed upside down in a creek, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said Thursday at a press conference. The satellite, which now is officially called GOES-East, is giving weather forecasters "invaluable data" about extreme weather events, Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross said last month.

"There is very high confidence on the general track and intensity of this storm as it heads from off the mid-Atlantic Coast toward Nova Scotia, which will get a direct hit of heavy snow and high wind".
