Malaysia Confirms New Phase of MH370 Flight Search

Malaysia will allow a US-based exploration firm to resume the search for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, an airline support group told families of the victims on Friday, in a bid to solve one of the world's greatest aviation mysteries.

The news came after the company, Ocean Infinity, said this week it had already dispatched a research vessel towards the expected search zone as it believed a deal would be finalised imminently. The Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777-200 took off from the Malaysian capital on its way to Beijing, China, on March 8, 2014 and disappeared from the radars some 40 minutes later with 227 passengers and 12 crew members on board.

That's a tall order, and not only because previous searches - including the 1,046-day effort conducted by the Malaysian, Chinese and Australian governments immediately after the disappearance - have been fruitless.

Ocean Infinity is reportedly working on a "no cure, no fee" basis, which means the company won't get paid unless it finds MH370.

The Malaysian government said it will allow a U.S. exploration firm to resume the search, Reuters reported.

A spokesman for the company added: "The company are awaiting final contract award before the search recommences". The search was suspended in January 2017.

But a report from the Australian Transport Safety Board released later in the year pointed to a new area where the plane could be found.

The vessel is carrying several autonomous submarines which can be launched from the boat to scour the seabed for fragments of the jet.

Only three confirmed fragments of MH370 have been found, all of them on western Indian Ocean shores, including a two-metre wing part known as a flaperon.
