BC adds 5600 jobs in December, economists chew over BoC rate hike

Calgary's unemployment rate went from 9.6 per cent in December 2016 to 7.2 per cent in December 2017.

The city ended the year with a significantly-lower unemployment rate than 12 months before, according to Statistics Canada labour market survey numbers issued Friday.

The Canadian economy added a net 78,600 jobs in December on a seasonally adjusted basis, Statistics Canada said Friday, which almost matched the previous month's employment gain of 79,500.

While most of the new jobs in December were part-time, the bulk of new hires in 2017 were full-time. The jobless rate in Windsor fell to 6.1 per cent from 6.3 per cent, with an increase in employment and labour force.

The central bank has long fretted about the export sector, which did well in November as shipments of goods rose by 3.7 percent, the most in a year.

"This is pretty obviously one vote in favour of the bank certainly moving in March, if not bringing that forward to raising rates in January".

Several analysts said Friday's solid labour report might be enough to encourage Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz to introduce another interest-rate hike later this month. Economist Robert Kavcic said in a research note the Bank of Canada may move this month if a survey of executives the central bank publishes on Monday also shows strength. "We think that they'll wait and see what the outcome is of some of the trade talks".

"The books closed on a phenomenal year for Canadian employment with another spectacular result for December", CIBC economist Nick Exarhos wrote in a brief report.

The Red Deer area continues to have the lowest unemployment rate in Alberta.

Quebec and Alberta saw the biggest job gains last month. Job gains were observed among self-employed workers and public sector employees.
