FCC Chair Cancels Appearance At Consumer Electronics Show

Pai, who spearheaded the FCC's controversial decision, informed the Consumer Technology Association he would not be available for what was billed as a "candid conversation" with FTC acting chairwoman Maureen Ohlhausen, moderated by association president Gary Shapiro.

Pai has consistently attended CES for half a decade. Since unveiling a plan to repeal the 2015 net neutrality rules, Pai has received death threats, and been the target of harassment campaigns.

The current or incoming chairman of the FCC has attended every CES since at least 2009, and Pai has attended the last five shows.

The man who controversially once said he would take a "weed whacker" to former net neutrality regulations has met with fierce resistance since from consumers and activists and much of the world's media.

However, it is reported that Pai abruptly cancelled his appearance at the tech industry trade show because of death threats.

Shapiro did not give any explanation for Pai's cancellation, but in an interview with Digital Trends, speculated that it may have been for security reasons. Under the rules, the FCC was given the authority to regulate Internet service providers (ISPs) such as AT&T, Comcast and Verizon - similar to utilities - subjecting the entities to more government oversight.

Two people briefed on the matter said multiple security agencies were involved in investigating the threats.

In November, federal prosecutors filed criminal charges against a Syracuse man for allegedly threatening to kill a NY member of Congress unless he backed net neutrality.

In December, the FCC's meeting to vote on net neutrality was halted because of a bomb threat. The text of the 524-page order was formally released late Thursday.
