'Considerable Damage': N Korea Reportedly Hit Own City With Ballistic Missile

The Diplomat reports a single Hwasong-12/KN17 intermediate-range ballistic missile launched from Pukchang Airfield in South Pyongan Province on April 28 crashed in the city of Tokchan. A USA government source says that a 2017 rocket launch failed and crashed into one of the country's own cities.

A new report says North Korea hit one of its own cities a year ago during a failed missile test. The location of the crash was previously unknown, but a US government source told The Diplomat that the missile came down in the city of Tokchon, located approximately 40 miles northeast of the airfield.

Satellite imagery scanned by the authors shows damage to industrial or agricultural buildings near a residential area.

No casualties were reported, but given Pyongyang's rigid control of the press, it is impossible to know the extent of the destruction and possible loss of life caused by a missile plunging into a populated area.

However The Diplomat has revealed the missile crash-landed in the North Korean city of Tokchon causing significant damage to buildings there.

Another danger pointed out by The Diplomat comes from North Korea's newly demonstrated ability to carry out surprise tests. And there has been times they have done it from heavily populated regions.

The highly troubling report again highlights the dangers of North Korea's missile ambitions and raises concerns that should a future launch fail at the wrong time, the trajectory of the missile could appear to resemble an attack on Japan.

In the weeks after the failed April 28 launch one of three failures in that month - the Hwasong-12 enjoyed a successful launch on May 14.

In the war of words that followed, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un threatened to launch a missile strike on the United States with President Donald Trump then responding in kind, saying that he did not rule a military solution to the conflict.

Trump, who has frequently called Kim "little rocket man", tweeted Tuesday that he also has a nuclear button that's "bigger and more powerful".

With those changes, the USA would only have a few hours to detect pre-launch preparations in the event that North Korea prepares to strike.

South Korean officials offered high-level talks with North Korea to find ways to cooperate on the Olympics and discuss other inter-Korean issues.
