CES 2018: LG showcases 88-inches OLED display with an 8K resolution

CES 2018: LG showcases 88-inches OLED display with an 8K resolution

Once unveiled, this will largest and highest-resolution OLED TV in the market, Engadget reports.

LG will also be showcasing its 2018 speaker lineup at CES 2018, along with its new 32-inch UHD 4K monitor (model number is 32UK950).

LG Display announced, on January 1, the world's first 88-inch organic light emitting diode (OLED) display panel with 8K picture quality four times brighter than ultra-high definition (UHD) display panels now available.

With this in mind, we'd absolutely love to give the new LG 8K OLED TV a spin with some high dynamic range 4K Blu-ray disc movies, and preferably with Dolby Vision HDR running just to spice things up even further on exquisite detail. It sets a new standard in the 8K LED category and many wonder, how much more the companies be able to push the envelope in the home entertainment gadgets. The 88-in surpasses the current largest OLED screen by 11-in and massively ups its resolution to 7680 x 4320. LG's 77-inch 4K OLED display, the OLED77G6P, now costs a mere $20,000.

But OLED emits light by itself, so it doesn't lower luminance when the aperture ratio is lower, and is therefore best for 8K resolution, the company said. Meanwhile, Samsung shifted from OLED to QLED panels past year, making LG Display the only large-sized OLED display maker in the game. The former is the arm which sells OLED panels to all TV brands with OLED TVs on the market today, including Panasonic and Sony.

That said, LG's television is more notable for its technology and the simple fact that it exists; CES is about practical technology and a little bit of showboating, and LG's 88-inch 8K display is in the latter camp for 99 percent of the people that will get to sit down and take a look. Even if you were to pick up LG's huge display for a not-so-insignificant price, you'll be upscaling 4K content at best. We'll know what LG and Samsung, among others, have in store for us once CES 2018 kicks off starting January 9.
