Carlos Carvalhal asks Jordan Ayew to be a 'leader' for Swansea

Carlos Carvalhal asks Jordan Ayew to be a 'leader' for Swansea

New Swansea City manager Carlos Carvalhal said his side have taken the first step to overcoming the odds to stay in the Premier League with a 2-1 win at Watford on Saturday.

It was fifth defeat in the past six games for the side and has saw them drop from fourth to mid-table, while they are still seven points clear of the relegation zone and on course for survival.

"Now maybe 98 of those 100 people will say we will get relegated - maybe two of them will think we will not get relegated, but it's still a very small percentage. He said if you don't run you come and sit down next to me (on the bench)".

The hosts appeared to be cruising to victory after Andre Carrillo's opening goal, but they failed to capitalise on their comfortable position and, after 86 minutes, allowed Jordan Ayew to equalise.

"And I can tell you that me, my players, the chairman and our fans are not in the 100 people. It will be very tough and we have just taken the first step, but we believe".

In the 89th minute, Heurelho Gomes saved a powerful effort from Nathan Dyer but could only push it into the path of another Swansea substitute, Luciano Narsingh, who finished well to spark ecstatic celebrations in the dugout and the away end. We tried to win.

"It wasn't exactly what we wanted, because it is impossible in two days [since Carvalhal's appointment]", said the former Sheffield Wednesday boss.

Swansea's next game is against Tottenham on Tuesday, 2 January and, despite the euphoric nature of the win at Watford, Carvalhal struck a cautious tone.

"But with more time to train, we will be better".
