Sensex rises 100 points, Nifty above 10500, RCom shares gain over 30%

The Sensex and Nifty ended 2017 on a high note post increased buying by participants after the start of January series in the Futures and Options (F&O) segment.

On Friday, Nifty50 closed 53 points up at 10,531, while BSE Sensex settled 209 points up at 34,057.

The BSE 30-share Sensex closed at 33,911.81, down 98.80 points, or 0.29 percent, after touching a new all-time intra-day high. The 10-year bond yield was at 7.402%, a level last seen on July 2016, compared to its previous close of 7.396%.

The Sensex clocked its best performance in recent years in 2017, rising by 7,430.37, or 27.91 per cent year-on-year. The benchmark had crossed the 34, 000 mark on December 26, riding on a rally of high closings the entire year.

Tata Motrs, Bharti Infratel, Axis Bank, Tata Consultancy Services, Hero MotoCorp, HCL Technologies and Adani Ports emerged as the top gainers in the NIfty50 index, each gaining over 2 per cent.

Shares of Reliance Communications continued their rally for the fourth straight session Friday, ending 17 per cent higher after Mukesh Ambani stepped in to bail out the debt-ridden firm by acquiring spectrum, tower, optical fibre network and other assets.

Sector-wise, the rally was driven by telecom (up 1.63%), power (1.46%), teck (1.24%), IT (1.20%), auto (1.16%), FMCG (0.85%), consumer durables (0.85%), infrastructure (0.83%), capital goods (0.51%), realty (0.46%), bankex (0.36%) and healthcare (0.18%). Asian markets were firm, with MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan inching up 0.3 per cent.

Trading was thin across global markets on the last session of the year. Reliance Industries Ltd rose 0.6% to Rs930. European markets were down in early trade with Paris CAC 40 falling 0.11 per cent, while Frankfurt's DAX shed 0.29 per cent. London's FTSE rose 0.27 per cent.
