Urgent need for blood donations in Charlottetown over holiday season

Canadian Blood Services reports an urgent need for blood donations - and Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee is urging Islanders to roll up their sleeves now.

Blood donors are needed to fill about 370 appointments in Central Alberta between now and January 6 to help fill the need for donations this holiday season.

Jhoanna Delrosario, Canadian Blood Services territory manager who helped organize the event at Eau Claire, said the refugees who will give on New Year's Day are making an important impact.

"What happens this time of year, between Christmas and New Year's especially, is that people are out of their regular routines, off work, travelling and our attendance is much lower than we had hoped". Their "Pay it Forward" blood-drive is collecting donations all month for this cause.

The giving of gifts over the holiday season can result in the giving of life getting lost in the shuffle.

"We are pleased so many Canadians have stepped up to fill open appointments to give blood and are confident others will join them by year-end or early in the New Year", says Rick Prinzen, Canadian Blood Services' chief supply chain officer.

O-negative blood is in particular demand, since that is "the universal blood type" compatible with everyone.

A part-time student at the University of Alberta, Valdez said he walked by the clinic at 8249 114th St. and saw a sign urging people to donate blood.

The Red Deer clinic is open 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday, 9 a.m.to 1 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

"Every day we always get an update".

Blood donation takes about an hour from check-in to refreshments.

Canadian Blood Services said just four per cent of the Canadian population is supporting the need of patients across the country.
