Queen praises Manchester's powerful identity following Arena attack

Britain's Queen Elizabeth sits at a desk in the 1844 Room at Buckingham Palace, after recording her Christmas Day broadcast to the Commonwealth, in London. "You weren't expected to be around that long", she said.

Manchester suffered the worst terrorist attack in United Kingdom soil this year when twenty two people were killed after a suicide bomber detonated a device as people were leaving an Ariane Grande concert at the Manchester Arena on the 22nd May.

"This Christmas, I think of London and Manchester, whose powerful identities shone through over the past 12 months in the face of appalling attacks", she will add in the message which was to be broadcast at 1500 GMT.

"For many, the idea of "home" reaches beyond a physical building - to a hometown or city", she said in her televised address. "The patients I met were an example to us all, showing extraordinary bravery and resilience", she said in the 10-minute speech.

There were more deaths in June when three terrorists in a van ploughed into pedestrians on London Bridge then went on a knife rampage in Borough Market, killing eight in total.

Looking back over 2017, the Queen reflected fondly on her relationship with Prince Philip amid his decision to "slow down a little".

"We think of our homes as places of warmth, familiarity and love ... there is a timeless simplicity to the pull of home", she said.

This year, Meghan Markle will join the Royal Family for the first time.

The Queen will praise her husband in her Christmas message for his "support and unique sense of humour".

Pictures of the Queen's great grandchildren, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, can be seen, along with two wedding related images of the Queen and Philip - but taken 70 years apart.

Markle, who was shown briefly in the program's closing images, attended a Christmas carol service with the royal family on Monday at a church near the queen's Sandringham estate, in Norfolk, England.

The couple celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary in November having been married at Westminster Abbey in 1947.

Wearing a brown coat and hat, boots and bag, Markle walked with future husband Harry, his brother Prince William and his wife Kate on their way to St Mary Magdalene Church for a Christmas morning service.
