Twitter Suspends Source Of Donald Trump's Much-Blasted Anti-Muslim Retweets

Twitter has stepped up new anti-hate speech measures and began enforcing them Monday. Groups included in this policy will be those that identify as such or engage in activity - both on and off the platform - that promotes violence.

Let us be clear that the authenticity of the videos Trump posted have been widely disputed-Dutch authorities denied that a video titled "Muslim migrant beats up Dutch boy on crutches" involved any migrants at all, and a video titled "Islamist mob pushes teenage boy off roof and beats him to death" was filmed in Egypt during the overthrow of president Mohamed Morsi.

Accounts that affiliate with organisations that use or promote violence against civilians to further their causes also violate Twitter's revised policies.

Twitter has suspended at least three accounts tied to far-right group Britain First, including one that had been retweeted by President Trump.

The official Britain First Twitter account has also been suspended, and past posts from these accounts can no longer appear on Twitter's timeline.

Also banned are accounts belonging to the Traditionalist Worker Party, which the Southern Poverty Law Center describes as white nationalist, as well as leaders of League of the South, a similar group which seeks "a free and independent Southern republic", according to its website.

Twitter's actions drew praise from civil rights groups.

Any account that abuses or threatens others through their profile information, including their username, display name, or profile bio.

The account for Jared Taylor, who heads the New Century Foundation, was among those suspended, along with his organization's flagship online publication, American Renaissance. Twitter eventually revoked his verification, as it did to some other prominent white nationalists, including Richard Spencer.

Muslim Advocates, which also sits on Twitter's Trust and Safety Council, told the company in a letter that Britain First was trying to "perpetuate and fuel hatred and fear of Muslims".

Content that glorifies violence or the perpetrators of a violent act.

There was a backlash against Twitter after it suspending the account of actress Rose McGowan who opened a public campaign over sexual harassment and abuse, specifically naming Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein.

As for those changes, Twitter pointed to past controversies in a statement today addressing the new rules.

"In our efforts to be more aggressive here, we may make some mistakes and are working on a robust appeals process", Twitter said in a blog post Monday.
