Ryanair is to recognise cabin crew unions for the first time

"This is disappointing given all that's been said in the media over the last five days".

Pilots' union IMPACT has said there is an urgent need to end the uncertainty.

The airline is due to meet a pilots' union for the first time in its 32-year history on Tuesday.

Irish low-priced carrier Ryanair will move on to meetings with cabin crew unions "in due course", it said on Tuesday, following its surprise shift to talk with pilot unions and after criticism from a German cabin crew union.

IMPACT Trade Union has reiterated a threat of strike action by the Irish-based Ryanair pilots the union represents following a meeting with the airline on Tuesday evening.

Mr O'Leary said the move was "putting the needs of our customers first, and avoiding disruption to their Christmas flights".

He said: "We have meetings with the German unions tomorrow and Portuguese on Thursday, and we have meetings set up throughout January".

In October, airline boss Michael O'Leary wrote to his pilots to offer them better pay and conditions after Ryanair was forced to cancel thousands of flights.

117 Ireland-based pilots backed industrial action in a bid to force the airline to recognise unions by a margin of 94 per cent to six per cent in secret ballots.

The first ever talks between unions and management at Ryanair will take place later.

However IMPACT, the union involved, has already warned that the strike is suspended rather than cancelled.

Following Behrens remarks, Ryanair issued a statement and said it was just "starting" negotiations with pilot unions and that it expected those talks would "lead on in the new year to meetings with other EU pilot unions and cabin crew unions as well".

"We have had a number of threatened strikes across a number of countries in Europe and to protect our passenger's travel plans over the Christmas period we've chose to make that decision now".
