A member of one of South Korea's leading boy bands has died suddenly.

Kim Jong-hyun, better known by the stage name Jonghyun, was found unconscious at a hotel in Seoul on Monday and was pronounced dead later at a nearby hospital.

News of Jonghyun's death prompted a flurry of messages on social media, with many fans voicing disbelief. He was transported to the hospital, but never regained consciousness, according to Korean news agency Yonhap.

Jonghyun shot to fame when the band was formed by K-Pop hit factory SM Entertainment in 2008.

Police said they received a telephone call from his sister at 4:42 p.m. Monday, saying she thought he may have attempted suicide. They released six chart-topping albums in Korea and five in Japan, in addition to embarking on numerous world tours.

SM Entertainment, the company that founded the group, confirmed Kim's death in a statement, writing that his funeral would be "carried out in the quietest manner with his family members and co-workers". Stars typically can't be seen dating, getting plastic surgery, or become embroiled in any kind of scandal, Tamar Herman, who covers K-pop for Billboard.com, told CNN earlier in 2017. They're one of only a handful of K-pop groups to find worldwide success. He launched a successful solo career in 2015. Kim's last public appearance was at his solo concert, titled "Inspired", from December 9-10 in Seoul.

Kim Jong-Hyun's tragic suicide note has allegedly been released, citing the high pressure of being a celebrity in Korea.

A KOREAN pop star has died today aged 27 at his home in Gangnam.
