General Motors Plan Allows Starbucks Customers To Order From Their Cars

GM's Marketplace technologywill be uploaded automatically to about 1.9 million model-years 2017. The application appears as a widget on a GM car's touchscreen, and doesn't require the driver to type, scroll or search for desired services. Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts, and Applebee's will allow drivers to order food and drink ahead of pickup; Shell will provide drivers the closest fuel station and soon let them pay for their fuel from the auto; Priceline will provide hotel and airfare information; and TGI Fridays will let a driver reserve a table.

GM's service - which is made for use while driving - is initially limited to about a dozen vendors but the automaker wants to add other brands and capabilities as it expands the service. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says distracted driving was responsible for 3,477 fatalities and 391,000 injuries in 2015, the most recent year for which it has data. The app will be a part of any eligible Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, or Cadillac infotainment system and is meant to be used while driving, as "GM designs its in-vehicle systems to minimize manual interactions, helping drivers keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel". "For most retailers and consumer brands, the daily commute is the only time not accessible in a consumer's day", Chamorro said, in the release. In addition, he said GM plans to expand integration into its vehicles of music, news and other information services.

Initial partners include a diverse group of large companies such as Starbucks (sbux), ExxonMobil (xom), and Wingstop.

"Marketplace gives merchants the ability to more safely engage with drivers and passengers in a meaningful way that provides true value for our customers", Chamorro added. Drivers will not need to purchase a data plan to receive the update.

Dunkin' Donuts will help customers start their day off right through an experience that allows DD Perks members to preorder and pay onscreen for their favorite coffee and donut, at their preferred pickup location.

Starbucks Corp.: The Seattle, Wash. -based coffee giant lets customers order ahead and use their Starbucks Rewards program. Although it varies by individual merchants, GM earns money off the platform through revenue sharing, platform-placement fees and the exchange of marketing support.

Drivers can also use Priceline to find hotel rooms, but they still have to use their phone to complete the reservation. Gm says it's the first ever commerce platform of the automotive industry which offers new service for on-demand reservations and purchases of goods and services.
