Redmi 5A first impressions: Xiaomi's next shot

Earlier today, Xiaomi launched the Redmi 5A entry-level Android smartphone in India. The company is known for the range of its smartphones. Jio has introduced this special monthly plan for Redmi 5A users at ₹199.

Xiaomi has not disclosed any specific information about these phones, however the same phone was spotted on various benchmarking websites and we have a list of its specifications from these sources. Xiaomi will also launch these smartphones in Pakistan and other Asian countires very soon.

The Redmi 4's successor Redmi 5 is expected to feature a 5.7-inch display with 1,440x720 resolution. Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 comes with highest clock speed of 1.8 GHz and is expected to be on the smartphone. There's another variant of the smartphone, with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage, which is priced at Rs. 5,999. The smartphone was launched at a price of Rs. 5,999 for the 2GB RAM/ 16GB storage variant, but at launch the price will be Rs. 4,999 for the first five million buyers. All these variants to come with a memory expansion option. The users can further expand the storage via microSD card. At the front, there will be a 5 megapixel selfie-shooter. The handset's primary camera has a 13MP sensor, just like past year, and a 5MP selfie-camera. You can expect good quality videos through the phone.

The Redmi 5A is powered by a 3,000 mAh battery underneath, which is actually lesser than 3,120 mAh found on the Redmi 4A but sufficient for what should be a day long battery life. There will also be a rear mounted Fingerprint Scanner at the back panel underneath the flashlight. Out of the box, the handset runs on Android 7.1.2 Nougat with MIUI 9 on the top.

While I'll reserve my judgement on the camera till the review, a few test shots in daylight came out quite well for a phone at this price.

Though it's not much different from the company's past phones in the budget segment (remember the Redmi 4A?), this time the price makes a big difference. It'll hit Flipkart, the brand's site, and the Mi Home Store on 7 December at 12 pm before eventually making its way to other offline retailers.
