Contestant from South Africa wins Miss Universe crown

The 30-year-old model, who has served twice as a backstage host for Miss Universe, recently expressed her disappointment in not seeing any curvy contestants compete in the worldwide beauty pageant.

The performance drew worldwide attention and admiration. She said that Miss Universe was "a woman that's overcome many fears".

Steve Harvey returned as the show's host despite botching the 2015 Miss Universe crowning.

By proudly wearing her natural hair, she is doing just that, standing for the women of color who have had to deal with the rude comments, unnecessary stares, touching, and intolerance in the workplace, simply because of the hairstyles they chose to wear which best suit their texture.

South Africa's Nel-Peters was declared victor besting 91 other delegates and became the second South African woman to be crowned Miss Universe after Margaret Gardiner's win in 1978.

Nel-Peters beat out runner-up Laura González, Miss Colombia, and second runner-up Miss Jamaica, Davina Bennett, in the November 26 competition.

Solenn Heussaff did not only greet Peters but also all the Miss Universe candidates, whom she called "confident and handsome women".

Nel-Peters, who recently finished her undergraduate degree in Business Management wants to use the newly-acquired title to champion issues relating to HIV/AIDS which is killing millions of people in Africa every year. This year's edition had the most contestants ever, including the first representatives in its history of Cambodia, Laos and Nepal.

Former Miss South Africas Cindy Nell, Liesl Laurie, Ntandoyenkosi Kunene and Kerishnie Naicker took to Instagram to applaud the new Miss Universe.

The current Miss Universe, Iris Mittenaere from France, crowned her successor to a din of squeals and cheers.

In September, Bennett told the Jamaica Observer that short, natural hair needs to be embraced more, and not ignored when they asked about the beauty stereotypes she believes need to be challenged. "Because not yet have we had a curvy girl in Miss Universe or even in the Miss USA pageant".

Ruth Quashie made Ghana proud.
