Ben Stokes: England all-rounder in talks with NZ side Canterbury

Initial reports suggested the all-rounder may be heading to Adelaide to join the England squad ahead of the second test against Australia starting Saturday, but that was quickly quashed by the England Cricket Board (ECB).

Sky Sport UK are reporting that the Christchurch-born player is flying to New Zealand to spend time with family.

New Zealand side Canterbury say they have held talks with Ben Stokes after the England all-rounder was seen at Heathrow airport on Monday.

Stokes moved from New Zealand to England as a child so his father Gerard, a former rugby league worldwide, could take a coaching role.

The Durham player is still suspended from playing by the European Central Bank pending a police investigation after he was involved in a brawl outside a nightclub in Bristol in September.

Canterbury coach Gary Stead said Stokes' possible involvement or not in the Ashes "hasn't been discussed whatsoever".

Canterbury Cricket have been approached for comment but have not responded to RNZ's requests.

Stokes was dropped from the England tour to Australia while being investigated for an alleged assault in Bristol earlier this year.

Travel arrangements have not been arranged by them.

Stokes is travelling to New Zealand, but the European Central Bank confirmed to Sky Sports News on Monday that the 26-year-old "is not on his way to the Ashes, England Lions or any other official training camps with the England setup".

Also no updates on police investigation following Bristol incident.

He is still awaiting the outcome of the police investigation. He has not played cricket since then, and the European Central Bank has confirmed Stokes will not join the Ashes tour until the police investigation is complete.

England, the Ashes holders, lost the first Test against Australia by 10 wickets in Brisbane.
