Apple Postpones Release of HomePod Speaker

But the Cupertino, CA-based Apple says the device needs a little more tinkering.

Apple has told CNBC it has delayed its HomePod smart speaker until "early 2018" as it's not quite ready yet. The smart speaker was due to launch in the US, UK, and Australia in December 2017, having been announced back in June alongside the iMac Pro at WWDC. Competitors in the smart speaker space, meanwhile, are flooding the zone.

The HomePod, introduced in June at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, was was priced at $350.

Tim Bajarin, an analyst with Creative Strategies, called Apple's decision is a "smart move", that buys the company time to get it right. The speaker is equipped with a 4-inch woofer, six microphones and an array of seven tweeters. Where Apple does fall short is providing a smart experience with Siri. You can stream other services to it from a smartphone, but not with Siri.

VentureBeat has reached out to Apple for further comment on the cause of the delay.

Apple's HomePod speaker will reportedly be released in 2018, technology website The Verge reports.

In terms of smart home assistant, Apple is now running a distant third in the market, which isn't bad for a platform without corresponding hardware, making us wonder if the delay in release is to give Apple time to improve the bells and whistles of the device and build up the list of devices compatible with Siri in a market being flooded with smart speakers. HomePod will be a while before we see it on sale and available to the public. We also send freebies and lots of other goodies exclusively to our email subscribers.
