Israeli Finance Minister meets Palestinian PM to discuss economic steps

At least a dozen Gaza terrorists were killed and more wounded Monday after the IDF detonated a terror tunnel leading to Kibbutz Kissufim from with the enclave beneath Israel's southern border with Gaza.

PM Netanyahu announced the news at the weekly Likud faction meeting, saying: "I told you many times before that we are developing breakthrough technology to deal with the tunnel threat".

The Israeli blockade of the occupied Gaza Strip, in its current form, has been in place since June 2007, when Israel imposed an airtight land, sea and air blockade on the area.

It said the Israeli attack "targeting mujahedeen and civilians is a risky escalation", adding that they would study potential responses.

The ministry officially identified five of those killed as members of the al-Quds Brigade, the Islamic Jihad's military wing: Brigade Commander Arafat Marshood, Deputy Commander Hasan Abu Hasanein, Ahmad Khalil Abu Armaneh, 25, Omar Nassar Al-Falit, 27 and Mohammed al-Agha, 22.

Israel is using sophisticated measures to thwart tunnels dug by militants.

The Palestinian presidency has refuted allegations made in an article by the Israeli daily Haaretz, in which former Israeli members of parliament were quoted as saying that President Mahmoud Abbas claimed he would not appoint Hamas figures to his cabinet if they did not publicly recognise Israel. The tunnel extended for over a mile, some of it deep into Israeli territory.

Islamic Jihad spokesman in Gaza Dawood Shihab told reporters "our response to this crime will be taken in the right moment. Today we detected a tunnel and destroyed it and we will continue to do so".

The IDF also said that Hamas is "responsible for all hostile activity" emanating from the Gaza Strip directed at Israel.

The anticipated handover comes as part of ongoing efforts to end a decade-long political split between Hamas and rival Palestinian faction Fatah, which runs the PA. Israel has warned that it will not accept a unity government that includes Hamas if it does not disarm and recognise the country, among other demands.
