Counting on Positive BREXIT Negotiations: Theresa May

European Union officials say Britain has so far not made sufficient progress on preliminary negotiations centring on the divorce bill, despite May's push for a breakthrough with her Florence speech last month. Because what we are dealing with here is not rocket science.

The European Commission has hit back at Theresa May's comments on Brexit negotiations, admonishing the Prime Minister and warning Britain it still has more work to do before a deal can be struck. This person would need to be a master of detail, know how to get Whitehall to do things it doesn't want to do and not be involved in the Brexit talks themselves to try and limit the extent to which this effort contaminates the negotiations.

She said Brexit talks needed to be focused on the long-term future relationship between the two after a limited implementation period.

This week the European Union will decide whether sufficient progress has been made to allow the talks to progress on to the terms of any future trading arrangement.

If they don't agree then they wouldn't get another chance until a summit in December before leaving the bloc formally on March 29, 2019.

The EU Parliament voted last week to block Brexit talks from moving onto discussions about Britain's future relationship.

"This will never be a 100% win for one side or the other side".

"The truth is the overwhelming majority of Conservative MPs, the truth is the entirety of the cabinet, the truth is the overwhelming majority of people, want the prime minister to concentrate on doing the job that 14 million people elected her to do earlier this year", said United Kingdom environment secretary Michael Gove, who had been one of the leadership contenders for the Conservatives alongside May when David Cameron exited 10, Downing Street after the Brexit vote last year.

In the wake of the Brexit referendum, the British Conservative Party changed.

Labour's Shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer cautioned that "this slow progress is a real concern" and claims negotiators are "further apart not closer together" than they were at the start of talks.

The fear in European capitals is that May is no longer calling the shots, making it virtually impossible to negotiate with the British government.

"And as we look forward to the next stage, the ball is in their court, but I'm optimistic it will receive a positive response, because what we are seeking is not just the best possible deal for us, but I believe that will also be the best possible deal for our friends too". He said American, Japanese and Chinese banks use London to engage in considerable financial activity with the rest of the continent and that they are nervous about the final outcome of the negotiations.

May dismissed the brewing dissent as she told reporters that she had the "full support" of her Cabinet. Just underlining that it is important that both sides are ready and able to move on.

The Danish minister, who is tipped as a future prime minister, was one of a number of key politicians Davis met last month, including senior figures in the Dutch and Belgian governments and MEPs from the largest group in the European parliament, the European People's party, representing constituencies in Spain, Germany and Ireland.
